On the morning of April 15, Wang Meng, the "People's Artist" and former Minister of Culture, returned to his alma mater, Hebei Normal University, to deliver a special lecture titled "The Charm of Language Art". The event, hosted by Professor Guo Baoliang from the School of Liberal Arts, attracted over 600 teacher and student representatives. Fu Jianjun, Deputy Party Secretary of the university, and Liang Ying, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President, were in attendance.
During the lecture, the 92-year-old literary master, who continues to write prolifically, traced the origins of literature and the nature of language. Using vivid examples such as The Arabian Nights and unique linguistic phenomena like "the black sun", Wang emphasized that language is not merely a tool for expression but the very foundation for the generation and expansion of thought, shaping human emotion and memory.
In the interactive session, Wang Meng shared his insights on the challenges of the digital age, addressing the trend of simplified and homogenized online language. He cautioned that while Artificial Intelligence excels at information integration, it cannot replicate the human soul, life experience, or true creativity found in classic literature like Dream of the Red Chamber. Wang urged the younger generation to resist the tide of technological convenience and instead cultivate their independent thinking and creative abilities. As a key event of the 4th "Dianyao China"(Illuminating China with Classics) Reading Conference, this profound and engaging dialogue served as a significant opportunity for the teachers and students to connect with a literary giant and reaffirm the enduring value of classic reading.
